How to do it..... correctly

We were very pleased to be asked to commission & certify the recently installed HONEYWELL BA298 RPZ valve in the Durham area. Our customer here (on the right), Mr Colin Watts, clearly knows how to correctly install the New RPZ valve. Our thanks also to Northumbrian Water for this photo.

how not to do it (5)

Here, the Watts 009 QT RPZ valve has been fitted without a tundish. What was the installer thinking about ? Its a very good choice of valve, which sadly is no longer approved for UK use but the installer does not understand why the RPZ valve is being fitted or how it might work.

How not to do it (4)........

This is quite a common installation fault. The RPZ valve is situated too close to other objects, in this case its almost touching the ceiling above, which prevents the Accredited RPZ valve Tester from attaching the test equipment. Here the isolation valves have been turned through 90 degrees & once again no thought has been given to servicing or testing the RPZ valve, as they are pointing away from the tester. As a general rule we recommend that a minimum of 250mm is available above the RPZ valve for servicing & testing.

Its clear that the installer here, knows very little about RPZ valves & how to fit them correctly.

How not to do it (3)

Not a very good picture and not as interesting as the others ( below ) but the base of this valve was covered with ice. The Relief valve needed replacing from the frost damage. Its been a hard winter on RPZ valves, we have repaired or replaced about 20 RPZ valves due to frost damage.

How not to do it (2).......

In the UK, RPZ valves should only be fitted Horizontally.
These (two) Watts 009 RPZ valves had been fitted vertically
a very good example of how not to do it.

How not to do it......

This feed, from the 3rd test port, goes to an exterior hose tap and ALSO to an ICE MAKING MACHINE in a hotel.  Not only does it compromise the "wholesome" drinking water in the hotel but it could easily feed the ice making machine ( and your G & T ) with contaminated water.

The "plumber" who fitted this is probably at risk of a criminal prosecution, but its the valve owner who is ultimately responsible.

Our advice :- YOU SHOULD ONLY ASK ACCREDITED RPZ VALVE TESTERS TO CARRY OUT WORK ON BACKFLOW PREVENTION
